According to a new report on Engadget.com, nearly 500,000 Ford SUVs are being recalled due to a defective rearview camera. If a vehicle’s rearview camera fails, the driver could accidentally run over small children or pedestrians while backing up. Rearview video cameras are an essential safety feature that is required by federal law. Ford’s recall affects motor vehicles sold throughout North America and globally. The recall states that certain model SUVs’ have rearview cameras that have a faulty video output issue.
According to multiple sources, the recall concerns certain 2020 to 2023 model-year Lincoln Aviators and Ford Explorers. The recall also concerns thousands of 2020 to 2022 model Lincoln Corsairs. The recalled SUVs come with 360-degree cameras that show live footage on the vehicle’s entertainment touchscreen. Most of the recalled motor vehicles were sold in the United States.
According to an NHTSA document (PDF), the government agency reached out to Ford in 2021 concerning allegations that the live view camera was displaying a blue image and not the surrounding area around the SUV. In 2021, Ford Motor Company initiated a safety recall to correct the blue image issue. Ford also worked with its suppliers to diagnose the issue, but Ford engineers were not able to duplicate the issue until last month. This may be the reason why Ford waited until recently to recall the affected motor vehicles.
So far, there have been more than 2,100 warranty claims concerning the issue submitted since November 30th, 2022. Ford Motor Company stated that they are aware of at least 17 car accidents that purportedly happened due to the rear camera blue screen issue. Reuters reported that the affected vehicles were recalled back in 2021 due to an image processing module software defect.
Back-up cameras are an essential motor vehicle safety device that is required in all new motor vehicles. Rear cameras help to prevent back-up accidents with pedestrians, small children, and other motor vehicles. This issue has resulted in accidents. If you or a loved one have been injured or if you lost a loved one due to the defective rear camera, you may be qualified to pursue significant monetary compensation.
