On January 29, 2018, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration reported that Kareway Products, Inc. had initiated a nationwide recall of over 60,000 lots of their four fluid ounce GeriCare Eye Wash, Sterile Eye Irrigation Solution. The recall will include notices to retail stores and hospitals to remove their inventory of the recalled product from their retail or supply shelves and return the product to Kareway Products, Inc. effective January 29, 2018.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration stated that the Gericare Eye Wash, Sterile Eye Irrigation Solution (4 fluid ounce) product might be unsterile and unsafe to use due to possible microbial contamination.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration also included in their report, a Risk Statement regarding Gericare Eye Wash, Sterile Eye Irrigation Solution (4 fluid ounce).
The FDA’s Risk Statement states:
“The product potentially could be calamitous for any population due to a probability of a potential sight threatening eye infection or impairment. Kareway Products, Inc. has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall.”
GeriCare Eye Wash Solution is an eyewash solution that is used to irrigate the eye, relieve irritation, and wash away any debris on the eye. The GeriCare Eye Wash Solution, as with all eyewash solution, is supposed to be a safe and sterile eyewash solution. Eyewash solutions must be sterile and free from microbes and debris for the product to be safe for consumers to use.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration states that the affected Gericare Eye Wash, Sterile Eye Irrigation Solution lot that is being recalled is:
Lot #86041601 with the expiration date of 09/2019
The other way to identify the recalled product is by the UPC, which is UPC 3-57896-18604-3. The Gericare Eye Wash, Sterile Eye Irrigation Solution was first distributed to Nationwide and wholesale medical supply businesses before reaching hospitals, clinics, and drugstore shelves.
The FDA reported that Kareway Products, Inc. has been contacting their distributors and customers by way of a recall letter. Kareway Products, Inc. stated that they are also arranging for the recalled products return or disposal. The FDA is advising all consumers and businesses who are in possession of the Gericare Eye Wash, Sterile Eye Irrigation Solution lot#86041601 with the expiration date of 09/2019 to immediately stop using the eyewash solution and to halt the sale of the recalled product immediately.
The FDA also advised consumers, who have questions regarding the Gericare Eye Wash recall, to speak with Kareway Products’ Recall Department at recall@kareway.com or by telephone at (310) 532-0009. The department is open Monday through Fridays during the hours of 08:30 am to 05:30 pm (PST). Also, the FDA advises users of the recalled product who have experienced issues that could be related to using the recalled eyewash to speak with their to contact their physician or healthcare provider promptly.
