Cancer affects the body in different ways from person to person, and risk factors certainly play a role in a person’s chances of developing the disease. For example, genetics and age are known contributing factors that may put a person at risk for developing cancer. An additional risk factor that is linked to the development of cancer is exposure to environmental conditions. Individuals who are exposed to certain substances, such as asbestos and other toxins, may have a higher chance of developing cancer, including cancers of the head and neck. While head and neck cancers are not as common as skin, lung and breast cancer, the aftermath can be equally devastating and fatal.

As our country continues to remember and mourn the loss of so many innocent victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, first responders and survivors are still suffering the long-lasting effects of such a horrific tragedy. As we come closer to the twenty (20) year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a significant number of first responders and survivors are fighting various types of cancer. Many first responders and survivors who have not yet developed cancer are at risk of developing cancer in the future. The toxic substances emitted by the 9/11 blasts lingered in New York City for months, exposing thousands of innocent victims to hidden dangers.

At Parker Waichman LLP, our nationally-recognized New York 9/11 Zadroga Cancer Claims Lawyers represent many 9/11 victims who are fighting cancer that can be linked to the 9/11 attacks. By filing a claim, many victims can receive compensation and medical resources to help with the fight against a potentially fatal disease.

Head and Neck Cancers Associated with Exposure to Toxins Resulting from the 9/11 Terror Attacks

Head and neck cancers can develop in various parts of the head, neck, mouth, nose, face, and throat. Such diseases typically begin as squamous cells that line the inside layers of the head and neck (such as the mouth or nose). Head and neck cancers fall into sub-categories that include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Oral (including lips, gums, inside of the mouth, parts of the tongue, and the top of the mouth);
  • Pharynx (which includes the following three parts of the throat: nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx);
  • Larynx (voice box);
  • Sinuses and nasal cavity; and
  • Salivary glands.

The most common cancer 9/11 first responders and survivors are non-melanoma skin cancer, followed by prostate cancer and melanoma of the skin. Oropharynx cancer, a sub-set of pharynx cancer, is on the list of common cancers associated with toxins emitted from the 9/11 blasts. So far, nearly one-hundred (100) first responders and at least forty-five (45) survivors have developed oropharynx cancer, demonstrating that there is a strong link between exposure to toxins following 9/11 and head and neck cancers.

As such, all 9/11 first responders and survivors should be on the lookout for symptoms associated with head and neck cancer that include, among others, facial pain, voice loss, flu-like symptoms, weight loss, difficulty swallowing, difficulty moving the tongue, and lumps in the mouth, throat or neck. Because of the strong link between the 9/11 attacks and the development of cancer in first responders and survivors, eligible victims have an opportunity to file a 9/11 Zadroga Cancer Claim to seek compensation and much-needed medical treatment to overcome their fight against cancer.
