Safety Alert: Burn and Impact Risks Prompt Best Buy to Recall Specific Fire Tables
Popular electronics retailer, Best Buy, has recently issued a recall of certain fire tables from the Insignia and Yardbird brands due to potential safety hazards. The tables in question come fitted with lava rocks that pose significant risks to users. It has been reported that these rocks can fracture and be forcefully ejected from the fire tables, presenting both burn and impact injury hazards to individuals nearby.
The products impacted by this recall are:
- Insignia Fire Tables: These tables, identifiable with a black finish, incorporate a cabinet designed to house the propane tank. Above this, there is a square surface table and a recessed center designed to accommodate the heating element and the lava rock fill. Two sizes are under the recall: the 28-inch model (NS-PFT28BK3) and the 30-inch model (NS-PFT30BK03), with respective dimensions of 28×28 inches and 30×30 inches. An identifying feature is the model number printed on a label located inside the cabinet door.
- Yardbird Fire Tables (2017 model): These fire tables come ready to assemble and feature a square top with twelve inset tiles and resin wicker siding. A hinged cabinet for the propane tank is also integrated into the design, along with a recessed center for the heating element. These Yardbird tables are around 43×43 inches in size and bear the model number MPN70639.
Only those fire tables from the Insignia and Yardbird brands that have lava rock fill are subject to this recall.
Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to cease using them immediately. Best Buy is offering a free repair, where the potentially hazardous lava rock fill will be replaced with a safer alternative – fire-safe glass beads. The company has initiated contact with all identified purchasers to alert them of the issue and provide details for the remedy.
To date, Best Buy has documented six incidents involving the ejection or splitting of lava rocks from the Insignia fire tables, leading to minor property damage in one case. For the 2017 Yardbird models, two such incidents have been reported, with one instance of minor property damage. Thankfully, no personal injuries have been reported from either model.
Consumers who want more information should contact Best Buy. Further details and guidance are available online at Best Buy’s dedicated recall page.
The Insignia tables were available for purchase between July 2022 and April 2023, priced between $90 and $170. They were sold on various platforms including Best Buy’s official website, eBay (via Best Buy’s channel), and TechLiquidators.com. Additionally, they were available through Best Buy for Business. The 2017 Yardbird models were sold exclusively in Minneapolis-based warehouses from April 2017 to July 2017, with a price range of $550 to $650. All the recalled products were manufactured in China. Best Buy Purchasing, LLC imported the Insignia brand tables, while Two Peaks LLC, which was acquired by Best Buy in 2021, imported the Yardbird models.
