There has been a recent outbreak of Salmonella bacteria among those who have consumed kratom products. Kratom products are sold by PDX Aromatics (sold under the corporate names Kraken Kratom, Soul Speciosa, and Phytoextractum), which has recalled, and expanded the recall at least twice, of many products containing kratom citing as the reason for the recall that the products may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.
In a broad sense, the recall encompasses kratom white vein power and capsule products and red vein powder products. Specifically, “some of the products recalled” include:
The recalled products are said to have been sold to consumers in the United States and shipped to those consumers between January 18, 2018 and March 8, 2018. On March 21, 2018, PDX Aromatics published a “Recalled Product Identification” detailing the brand, product name, the specific net weight and the lot codes of the recalled products which may be found on its website at www.pdxaromatics.com. The list of recalled products may also be found on the Food and Drug Administration website.
It has been reported that PDX Aromatics has identified a specific supplier of Kratom as the source of the Salmonella outbreak in its customers, and by recalling the product it is attempting to notify all customers who have consumed any of the recalled products to return the products to the company.
Many may not be aware of what kratom is what the products containing kratom are used for, the side effects, and whether you or a loved one has consumed any of the recalled products or other products containing kratom. According to Drugs.com, “the herbal product has been used as an alternative agent for muscle pain relief, diarrhea, and as a treatment for opiate addiction and withdrawal.” Typically, kratom is consumed by chewing, smoking, in a capsule form or by drinking in tea.
Sadly, kratom products are believed to have resulted in Salmonella bacteria infections in at least 87 people in 37 states to date. It is believed that the outbreak is directly linked to those who ingested products containing kratom. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include “fever, abdominal cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea that may be bloody.” If you or a loved one experience these symptoms after consuming kratom in any of the recalled products, or in any another form immediate medical attention should be sought.
Kratom has also caused great concerns with United States health authorities, in part, because it contains the chemicals found in opioids. On February 6, 2018, the FDA reported that it does not have any evidence that indicates the use of kratom for medical purposes, stated that it should not be used as an alternative to prescription opioids, and further reported that it should not even be used for opioid withdrawal symptoms. Moreover, on February 20, 2018, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that it was investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections which the agency links to kratom use.
It is clear from the various health agencies’ concerns and investigations into the recent Salmonella outbreak in consumers of kratom, coupled with the manufacturer’s various recalls mentioned above, that kratom may be a very dangerous substance with the ability to cause serious illness.
