Bayer Heart Health Advantage and Phytosterols
Bayer Heart Health Advantage is a nutritional supplement offering the benefit of phytosterols, a natural plant-based ingredient proven to help lower bad (LDL) cholesterol, which may help reduce the risk of heart disease. Phytosterols, also known as plant sterols, can help block the absorption of cholesterol from the digestive tract, which helps to lower LDL.
Phytosterols are found mostly in vegetable oils, nuts and legumes. There are about 44 sterols known to exist in plants. The most abundant phytosterols are beta-sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol. Diet rich in phytosterols is known to reduce serum cholesterol. For example, in one study it was found that subjects fed with wheat germ containing high phytosterol had 42 percent lower cholesterol in their blood as compared to those who were fed phytosterol-free wheat germ.
While phytosterol supplements have been shown to be effective in lowering cholesterol in some studies, there is some debate on their effectiveness. Some researchers contend that, when undergoing the manufacturing process, the phytosterols found in supplements may not be as biologically active, meaning that they may not be as effective in lowering cholesterol if not manufactured properly.
We are investigating allegations that the type of phytosterols contained in Bayer Heart Health Advantage have NO impact on cholesterol and that people purchasing this product are deriving no benefit. Unfortunately, the ingredient label for Bayer Heart Health Advantage lists only Phytosterols as a component, and does not specify the types of plant sterols this product contains. Other phytosterol supplement brands often do list the different plant sterols they contain.
