According to an online news report on wspa.com, individuals who purchased shower benches from Costco are being urged to discontinue using the benches immediately. The affected Costco teak shower benches are being recalled after several reports of injuries. One case resulted in a fractured tailbone.
The teak shower benches are manufactured by Ivena International and are sold exclusively at Cosco. The defect results in the bench “unexpectedly breaking and posing a fall hazard to the user,” according to Ivena International’s recall notice that is also posted on Costco’s website.
The recalled teak shower benches feature packaging printed with item number 1049998, and the boxes have a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 8886474018015. The recalled benches are advertised as being made with “100% wood,” are constructed with teak and feature wood paneling on the lower shelf and the seat.
There have been 81 occurrences of the shower benches “collapsing, breaking during use, or falling apart,” per the recall notice published on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website. At least four of those events caused injuries, including persistent head and body aches, fractured tailbone, and bruising.
The recall involves about 70,000 teak shower benches, according to the CPSC. Between October 2018 and June 2021, the benches were sold for about $80 in-store and $90 online. Customers who purchased the Cosco teak shower benches should immediately stop using the benches, according to both Ivena International and the CPSC. The recall notices also ask customers to return the recalled benches to Costco to receive a full refund. Additional information, and consumer contact information for Ivena International, can be found on the CPSC’s recall notice.
