FDA finds asbestos in makeup
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cautioned consumers to avoid cosmetic makeup sold at Claire’s Store and Beauty Plus Global after learning the products contain asbestos. The World Health Organization (WHO) previously announced that any exposure to asbestos, no matter how slight, is dangerous. Accordingly, the FDA is advising anyone who purchased the makeup at either Claire’s Store or Beauty Plus Global to stop using the makeup immediately according to CBS News. Both retailers have voluntarily recalled their cosmetic products.
CBS News reported that the FDA is consistently examining health and beauty products for harmful substances. The FDA identified several cosmetic products during its routine examination. According to the FDA, Beauty Plus Global recalled the makeup identified as Contour Effects Palette 2 bearing batch number S1603002/PD-C1179. Claire’s recall JoJo Siwa Makeup Set with SKU #887711136337 with Batch/Lot No. S180109.
The FDA alerted consumers about asbestos found in these products and the retailers’ voluntarily recall on June 6, 2019. However, the FDA determined that Claire’s sold three other products that contained asbestos in March of 2019. Claire’s initially denied the FDA claims, but ultimately agreed to recall those products as well. A not-for-profit research group announced its findings in 2017, indicating that some of Claire’s products are sold containing what it described as “high levels of asbestos.”
A representative for Claire’s stores stated that the company is highly concerned about the health and safety of its customers. Concerning their most recall voluntary recall campaign, the spokesperson said trace amounts of asbestos were located in the eyeshadow product that was one component of the larger kit the company recalled. The spokesperson added that trace amounts of asbestos are permitted in makeup sold in the European Union and Canada. The U.S. does not have any prohibition on the use of asbestos in makeup. Claire’s will offer a refund to any purchaser wishing to return the product. CBS was not able to contact a representative from Beauty Plus Global for comment.
