Gluteal Implants May Pose Cancer

UNITED STATES – As reported in an online news article published by www.curetoday.com, gluteal implants may be linked to cancer following reports of one woman dying of anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), the same type of cancer that has been linked to textured breast implants.

In March 2019, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held a hearing on textured breast implants and the risk of developing breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).  In July 2019, the FDA asked that one manufacturer of textured breast implants issue a global recall of its implants, citing numerous instances of patients with the affected implants developing cancer.

Textured breast implants are not the only implants linked to ALCL.  In early 2019, one woman who had textured gluteal implants was diagnosed with ALCL and later died.    The woman’s case was the first known diagnosis of ALCL linked to textured gluteal implants.

The woman had reportedly received the gluteal implants approximately 1 year before noticing ulceration on the skin around the implants.  Imaging identified fluid around the implants, which was like the fluid found around textured breast implants in patients who developed ALCL. By the time the woman with gluteal implants was diagnosed with ALCL, the cancer had already spread to other parts of her body, including her lungs.

What is Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL)?

ALCL is a rare type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is also a sub-type of T cell lymphoma, comprising approximately 16 percent of all T cell lymphoma cases.  Symptoms of implant-associated ALCL include, but may not be limited to, pain, swelling, and fluid around the implant.  In some cases, fluid may be present around the lungs and heart.  If detected early, ALCL is very treatable, and chemotherapy may be unnecessary.  In more severe cases, chemotherapy may be needed, and if a diagnosis is not made quickly, ALCL can be fatal.
