Lawsuit Filed Against Priest. Alleged sins from the past by a priest allegedly on the run are now the basis of yet another lawsuit against the Sacramento Diocese of the Catholic Church.
The suit alleges that the Rev. Javier Garcia molested an altar boy at Our Lady of Guadalupe in the mid-1970s.
Garcia is also accused of molesting children while working at churches in Woodland and Maxwell over the past three decades. However, he remains a fugitive.
Authorities believe that Garcia is in Acapulco, Mexico.
“(The plaintiffs) are also extremely interested in having justice served, which to them means that Bishop Weigand will pressure law enforcement to extradite Father Javier Garcia,” said the plaintiff’s attorney, Joseph George.
“Since 1995, we have been working with authorities to resolve this case. We’ve been appealing with Father Garcia to return from Mexico. We appealed today again to have him comeback to resolve these cases,” said the Rev. James Murphy.
But the attorneys are suspicious that the church is actually hiding offending priests in Mexico.
The lawsuit is the first filed since Gov. Gray Davis recently signed legislation that extends the statute of limitations.
