The MTA reported on October 1, 2018, that a collision on NJ-495 was causing delays to many Manhattan-bound bus lines. The Lincoln Tunnel area experienced delays that impacted commuters during rush hour.
The emergency response to the crash led to the bus lane being closed. Commuters complained of the terrible delays and long wait times.
Rush hour delays can be aggravating. However, added morning stress is not the only problem with the high volume of traffic on the road during morning and evening commutes. Traffic accidents are also common during these times of the day. Statistically, the evening rush hour is more dangerous than morning rush hour. In fact, while the morning’s crowded roadways lead to plenty of accidents, crash-related fatalities occur much more often between the hours of 4 and 6:59 p.m. than they do during the morning rush hour period from 7 a.m. to 9:59 a.m. Across the United States, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that there were 3,345 deaths during morning rush hours in 2016, and 6,201 deaths in evening rush hours. Evening rush hours had 85 percent higher rate of deaths. The second deadliest time-period was between 7 p.m. and 9:59 p.m.
One major factor in the evening and nighttime crashes is alcohol. Alcohol-related crashes are far more common in the evening hours and on the weekends. The NHTSA reports that alcohol plays a role in 3.3 times as many nighttime accidents as daytime crashes. Alcohol involvement is also more likely in weekend crashes where it contributed to 26 percent of crashes compared with 14 percent during weekday times.
