Parker Waichman LLP In Hurricane Sandy Litigation. On May 30, Parker Waichman LLP was designated co-lead counsel for Hurricane Sandy-related litigation against the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and/or National Grid. Pending and subsequent actions will be consolidated into one action before the Supreme Court, County of Nassau, New York.
The lawsuits arise from the effects of Hurricane Sandy, which struck the Northeastern United States in late October 2012, resulting in billions of dollars of damage to public and private property, municipal facilities, and businesses on Long Island, as well as prolonged power outages throughout the region.
The legal complaints allege that LIPA and National Grid failed to properly prepare for the storm; failed to adequately warn their customers; did not establish a proper emergency management system; failed to maintain power distribution equipment; and breached their contract with their customers to provide adequate service.
Peter J. Cambs Sr., senior litigation counsel at Parker Waichman, said that consolidating the litigation is helpful because of the “commonalities of the Plaintiff’s allegations.” Parker Waichman, he added, has a “proven track record handling both class action litigation and complex litigation.” The proposed structure will reduce duplications and help to insure a consistent strategy is in place that will best serve the interests of the victims, Cambs said.
Parker Waichman is also a member of the Plaintiffs Steering Committee.
