WILLIAMSBURG, NY- The Brooklynpaper.com writes that a man was killed on October 23, 2018, five days following an accident in which an SUV struck him while he was crossing the street.
The victim was identified as Filiberto Coalt, 35. Coalt was his on Lorimer Street at about 9:40 p.m. close to Montrose Avenue. Coalt lived nearby and was walking home when he was struck. The police report that the driver, a 40-year-old man, most likely failed to see Coalt when he hit him. The driver stated that he did not have time to stop once the victim was in the road.
Emergency responders brought Coalt to the Woodhill Hospital where he was listed as being in critical condition. Later the victim was transferred to Cornell Medical Center. Coalt died several days later from injuries that he sustained in the pedestrian accident.
The police are still investigating the crash. The driver stayed at the scene. No one has been arrested at this time. Police say that they must determine whether the driver could have been speeding at the time of the crash.
Pedestrian crashes across the United States have been becoming deadlier in recent years. Larger percentages of these accidents have been fatal or cause serious injuries. A big part of the reason for the increased risks is that bigger and more powerful vehicles like SUVs and trucks are becoming more popular and are making up a larger proportion of vehicles on the road.
SUVs have higher and flatter fronts. The result is that when they hit a person, they tend to cause damage to the chest and head, rather than cars that are more likely to strike lower on a person’s body and therefore injure the legs rather than vital organs.
