A former priest was arrested in Livonia on sexual battery charges in connection with an incident involving a minor in the mid-1980s.
The Rev. Robert Schaeufele, 54, is accused of sexually abusing a boy from August 1983 to February 1985. He was pastor at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Hudson, Fla., near St. Petersburg until he resigned abruptly April 15.
He reportedly left the area for counseling after he resigned.
Schaeufele was taken into custody Thursday night and is awaiting extradition to Florida.
He has served as a priest since the mid-1970s. The Catholic Diocese of St. Petersburg has reportedly said that Schaeufele will not serve publicly as a priest again.
