Sony PlayStation Hack

The Sony PlayStation hack occurred between April 17 and April 19, 2011. Sony was forced to turn off all PSN and Qriocity services because of the security breach. Sony did not announce the PlayStation Network data breach until April 26, leading many to criticize the company for not alerting customers sooner. For its part, Sony claims it was not aware of the severity of the hack until April 25, though it learned on April 19 that an intrusion had occurred and at that time decided to consult outside experts to assess the damage.

The user information put at risk by the hack included customer names, addresses, e-mail addresses, birthdays, PlayStation Network and Qriocity passwords, and user names, as well as online user handles, and possibly credit card related data. Unfortunately, it could be some time before it is known exactly what information was stolen by the hackers.

Sony has recommended that users change the passwords on other services and accounts that might use the same user name or password as their PSN account. Users have also been warned to review all account statements, and keep an eye on their credit reports in order to spot any unauthorized activity.
