Sony Announced The Recall Of Its Notebook Computers. Sony Corp said Thursday it would recall some 18,000 notebook computers in a pair of Vaio lines because of a faulty modem that can fry a phone line or deliver a shock to unwary users.
3,000 of the affected Vaio FRV25 and FRV27 notebooks were sold in the United States, said Sony, with the bulk of the defective portables sold in the Japanese market.
Recalled Notebook Computer May Pose A Shock Hazard
A person who touches some metal parts in the back of the laptop might feel a slight electric shock when the dial tone goes off while using the modem, a company spokesman said.
The modem is also unusually slow when using an adapter to connect to an outlet, he said. Several cases of the slow modem were reported in Japan, but no cases of electronic shock have been reported and it will not cause bodily injury, according to the spokesman.
Sony is replacing the analog modems for free, and is contacting all U.S. customers directly to recall their portable PCs. The recall costs, including shipping and repair, will total an estimated 500 million yen ($4.2 million), the company said.
