Tassimo Single-Cup Coffee Maker Defect and Injuries
At least 835,000 Tassimo Single-Cup Brewers were recalled in the U.S. on February 9, 2012. The Tassimo Single-Cup coffee maker recall also involved an additional 900,000 brewers in Canada. All of the recalled coffee makers use plastic discs, or T Discs, that are filled with coffee or tea to brew hot drinks. According to the recall notice, the brewer’s T Disc can burst and spray hot liquid and coffee grounds or tea leaves onto consumers using the brewer and onto bystanders, posing a burn hazard.
At the time of the recall, the maker of the Tassimo Single-Cup Brewers had received 140 reports of incidents with the coffee makers spraying hot liquid, coffee grounds or tea leaves onto consumers, including 37 reports of second-degree burn injuries. One incident involved a 10-year-old girl from Minnesota who received second-degree burns to her face and neck and had to be hospitalized. Because of the dangers posed by the recalled Tassimo Single-Cup coffee makers, consumers should stop using them immediately.
