WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Tesla Inc has announced it is recalling 947 vehicles in the United States due to a rearview image issue that can cause the rearview camera display to not “immediately display” when the recalled vehicle begins to back up. The issue can result in accidents with other vehicles or backup accidents that harm pedestrians. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that Tesla reported to the agency that the recall affects certain “2018-2019 Model S, Model X, and 2017-2020 Model 3 vehicles equipped with Autopilot Computer 2.5 and operating certain firmware releases.” The recalled vehicles currently do not comply with federal safety standards concerning rear visibility. Tesla stated that it would perform an “over-the-air software update” to correct the problem.
According to the NHTSA, a delayed rearview camera display increases the risk of an accident because the driver’s view of the vehicle’s rear is impaired. Tesla has had to respond to several software issues over the past few months.
Starting back on February 9, 2022, after discussions between the NHTSA and Tesla, the automaker reviewed consumer complaints concerning delayed or unavailable rearview image displays. Tesla performed several tests and then decided to issue a recall. Tesla stated, “despite not finding a noncompliance in the tests that Tesla conducted, a recall determination was made out of an abundance of caution to recognize the potential presence of a noncompliance in affected vehicles.”
