Woman dies falling down subway stairs
MANHATTAN, NY – According to Aol.com, a young woman died from injuries she sustained when she fell down a flight of stairs in Manhattan while trying to get to the subway. The incident took place at the 7th Avenue/53rd Street station on Monday. The victim, Malaysia Goodson, 22, was carrying her one-year-old child when she fell down the steps.
Goodson was found on the platform at about 8 p.m. The young mother and daycare worker were unconscious. The victim was taken to the Mount Sinai Hospital and was declared dead. Goodson’s daughter did not suffer any injuries in the accident.
The New York Police Department is still unsure whether Goodson’s fall was an accident or if she suffered some form of a medical episode which caused her to fall. According to the victim’s mother, Goodson had thyroid issues and could have fainted.
The incident has led to debate and public outrage regarding the public transportation system, which is seen by many as lacking accessibility. The majority of MTA stations, 75 percent, do not have any elevators. New York City Council Speaker, Corey Johnson said that the subway system’s lack of accessibility is “literally killing people,” and said that he was heartbroken by the tragic accident.
The MTA released a statement regarding the accident. The statement acknowledges the lack of accessibility and states that the city needs to make improvements. The MTA stated that they are adding up to 50 new elevators at stations. The Fast Forward Plan is designed to make sure that no one is ever more than two stops from a statin that has an elevator.
