Gainesville, FL – A news report published on WCJB states that Governor DeSantis signed an official proclamation naming the week of April 26-30, 2021, as “Work Zone Awareness Week.” Work zone Awareness Week is a campaign designed to remind drivers throughout Florida about the special precautions they need to abide by to avoid causing serious or fatal accidents in or near or around road work zones. According to accident data, the years 2016 through 2019 saw more than 47,000 work zone accidents were reported. Of those work zone accidents, 1,800 or more caused severe injuries to workers and motorists, and over 300 work zone-related traffic accidents resulted in death.
According to Troy Roberts, Florida Department of transportation communication specialist, We always talk about safety, but we are asking the Florida highway patrol in all local law-enforcement officers to talk about safety as well. Mr. Roberts believes that the two most common causes of work zone accidents are speeding and distracted driving. Mr. Roberts also stated other types of causes include changing lanes without looking in rearview mirrors other forms of distracted driving such as text messaging or playing with the GPS system. Mr. Roberts also added that driving and texting in the state of Florida is absolutely prohibited and at all times. In addition, using a handheld device while driving in a work zone or school zone is also prohibited. Mr. Roberts also stated that distracted driving is prevalent these days and presents one of the biggest challenges and ending traffic accidents in the state of Florida.
