While overall traffic deaths are slowly declining, pedestrian traffic deaths are still a major problem. This is a particularly serious issue in New York City, where pedestrians make up the greatest share of traffic deaths. Vision Zero, an initiative meant to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities, was established in New York City in 2014 to improve road safety. While progress is being made, pedestrian deaths at the hands of motorists are still far too common.
Our research team analyzed pedestrian traffic fatalities in Manhattan in data provided by the City of New York to determine the deadliest streets in Manhattan for pedestrians.

The majority of pedestrian fatality accidents are due to driver inattention or distraction. Distracted driving is a problem in many areas, particularly in places like New York City where there are high numbers of pedestrians and cyclists. Individuals who are victims of pedestrian accidents often suffer serious injuries, as even the smallest cars can cause serious physical damage.
You can be a more conscientious driver by doing the following:
- Stop at crosswalks when pedestrians are waiting to cross.
- Obey the posted speed limit and slow down around pedestrian-heavy areas.
- Look for pedestrians or cyclists before opening your car door.
