Four-vehicle accident on the Parkway

CARLE PLACE, LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK – As reported in online news articles published by longisland.news12.com and patch.com, two people are dead following a four-vehicle accident on Meadowbrook Parkway.

A Sunday afternoon accident ended in tragedy when a 23-year-old Westbury woman and a 24-year-old Syosset man were killed in a four-vehicle accident on Meadowbrook Parkway. The accident happened when a BMW X5, driven by a 22-year-old Massapequa man, traveling northbound on Meadowbrook Parkway near Exit M1 – Old Country Road struck the back of a 2018 Honda Civic, pushing it to the shoulder of the road where the vehicle slammed into a light pole.

The BMW then continued to strike the back of a Chrysler PT Cruiser and a GMC Acadia, also traveling northbound on Meadowbrook Parkway.  The GMC was pushed into the median where it stopped.  Both the BMW and Chrysler continued northbound before stopping in the middle of the road.

The 23-year-old woman and 24-year-old man were occupants of the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.  The 22-year-old driver of the BMW was transported to Winthrop University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.  No criminal charges are pending against anyone involved in the accident.  However, an investigation into the accident is ongoing, and authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Common Causes of Chain Reaction Accidents

Chain reaction accidents often begin with one vehicle rear-ending another, and then that second vehicle striking a third or fourth vehicle.   However, chain reaction accidents do not always involve a rear-end collision.  With heavy traffic, any collision between two vehicles can quickly snowball and include other vehicles.  Common causes of such accidents include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Following a vehicle too closely;
• Speeding;
• Inattention (i.e., texting, talking on the phone, or changing the radio station, among others);
• Failure to yield or signal;
• Failure to adhere to traffic signs;
• Weather conditions;
• Driving under the influence; and
• Driving while drowsy or falling asleep at the wheel.

In many cases, more than one cause can contribute to an accident, and multiple drivers may share the blame when determining who is at fault for causing an accident.
