Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced that local officials had completed several projects designed to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility at intersections and crosswalks throughout Long Island. The new safety projects added new wheelchair accessible ramps, upgraded crosswalks, and added more traffic signals and signs throughout Suffolk and Nassau Counties.
The first phase of Governor Cuomo’s groundbreaking Pedestrian Safety Action Plan upgraded a total of 225 uncontrolled crosswalk locations, constructed about two-dozen new crosswalks, and added signs and traffic signals at numerous locations throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. The second phase of the safety project installed 292 wheelchair-accessible ramps.
These new ramps bring the counties up to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The second phase installed pedestrian signals, new crosswalk buttons and also added new crosswalks at ten additional intersections.
