STONY BROOK, Long Island, N.Y. — Long Island News 12 reported that accident investigators are confounded by a four-car accident that happened around 9:00 p.m. at the intersection of Nicolls Road and Route 347 in Stony Brook. The Nicolls Road and Route 347 intersection is notoriously busy, even on a Sunday night when this accident happened. One man sustained injuries in the multi-vehicle crash. First responders took the injured man to Stony Brook University Hospital suffering from injuries the medical facility described as non-life threatening. The police departments’ final accident report has not been released. There is no update available concerning the medical condition of the motorist who required hospitalization.
Ascertaining fault is a difficult task in many accidents that occur at intersections. Traffic lights, traffic control signs, and road marking can provide some guidance as to the negligent party who caused the crash, but not always. The rules of the road identify the driver with the right of way in every instance motorists encounter. Knowing the right-of-way rules will help motorists understand who proceeds through an intersection first.
Crashes such as T-bone collisions, rear-end crashes, pedestrian accidents, motorcycle collisions, and bicycle accidents all happen at intersections. Drivers cause intersection accidents because the driver was not paying attention, driving too fast, as well as failing to yield to oncoming cars, pedestrians, and bikes. Additionally, intersection accidents occur when a motorist is experiencing the intoxicating effects of alcohol or drugs. Similarly, accidents happen at intersections due to inattentive drivers who are texting while driving.
There are numerous intersections in New York City that are notoriously dangerous. Some of those intersections include Canal and Mott Streets, Lafayette and Canal Street, East 30thand Third Avenue, East 62nd and First Avenue, along with East 96thand Third Avenue. Tillary Street and Flatbush in Brooklyn is a dangerous intersection, and so is Linden Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue located in Queens. However, every intersection can be dangerous when motorists do not know the rules of the road.
