Male Pedestrian Killed on LI
MIDDLE ISLAND, Long Island, N.Y. — A male trying to cross the road in Middle Island died after a car ran him down. The fatal pedestrian crash occurred around 5:55 a.m. on a Saturday morning on Miller Place-Yaphank Road in Middle Island according to the Daily Voice. The man was 35-years-of-age. There is no information regarding the status of the accident investigation commenced by Suffolk Police. However, Suffolk Police has asked for information about the accident from by-standers. The fatal pedestrian accident comes on the heels of an announcement of a study recently completed that indicated pedestrian deaths are at the highest rate they have been in nearly three decades.
Suffolk Police said that the 35-year-old man was rushed to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital, located in Fort Jefferson where he died. Suffolk Police know little else about the crash. They said that the driver, a 45-year-old woman from Middle Island, drove her 2011 Buick Regal sedan northerly on Miller Place-Yaphank Road when she hit the man. The driver of the Buick was uninjured in the incident.
Suffolk Police crash investigators gathered evidence and impounded the woman’s car to perform standard safety checks. They did not release the results of those tests. Officers did ask for people with information about the accident to contact them.
According to the results of a study recently released conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety indicated that 5,987 pedestrians died in 2016. The sum is the highest since 1990 and represents a 46 percent increase since the lowest pedestrian death rate in 2009, according to ABC 7 NY.
Disturbing trends emerged from that study. The researchers found that many of the deadly accidents involved SUVs, happened at night, were in poorly designed crosswalks, or not in a crosswalk at all. New York State followed a similar trend. In 2016, 320 pedestrians died in accidents. Researchers attributed many of these those deaths to driver inattention.
