Most Pedestrian Accidents Happen at Night and in Urban Areas
Because visibility is low during nighttime and early morning hours, most pedestrian accidents happen during this time, with many of the accidents ending in tragic fatal injuries. According to 2016 national data published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 75 percent of pedestrian accidents happened in the dark compared to 22 percent of pedestrian accidents happening in daylight. Additionally, the 2016 data reveals that most pedestrian accidents in the summer months happen between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.
Another factor that contributes to the number of pedestrian accidents in a given area is whether the area is urban or rural. The 2016 data published by the NHTSA shows that 76 percent of pedestrian fatalities happen in urban areas versus 24 percent occurring in rural areas.
The 2016 data also shows that 72 percent of pedestrian accidents happened at non-intersections versus 18 percent of accidents that happen at intersections and 10 percent of accidents that happen in other locations, including, among others, roadsides/shoulders, sidewalks, bicycle lanes, driveways, shared-use paths and trails, non-traffic way areas, and parking lanes.
