Teenager Drag-Racing in BMW Caught on Video and Arrested
LONG ISLAND, NY- According to nbcnewyork.com, an 18-year-old has been arrested after crashing into a that was car exiting a parking lot on April 15, 2018. The teen’s BMW was filmed speeding down Central Avenue in a race with another car when the BMW hit a 2015 Nissan injuring that car’s two occupants.
The individuals traveling in the Nissan were both taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center for treatment of multiple injuries. The driver of the BMW fled the scene.
Police were tipped off to the identity of the driver of the BMW when they received a video from an anonymous person. Police have not released the name of the driver of the BMW, but state that he or she will face several charges, including engaging in an illegal speed contest, reckless driving, and third-degree assault.
Police state that the county has seized the vehicle.
Drag racing is illegal and extremely dangerous. It is difficult to determine how many people are killed as a result of drag races. The numbers published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicate 153 people were killed in accidents involving drag racing between the years 2001 and 2010. However, the numbers would be much higher is the NHTSA had not altered their way of tracking these fatalities. Up until 2009, a crash was recorded as a racing accident as long as someone involved was charged, or if the police and investigators concluded that the accident was caused by racing. The new way of counting the death toll only includes accidents in which someone was charged with racing. If the numbers were calculated as they were previously, the number of fatalities would be 1,047 between the year 2001 and 2008.
