SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY- The nypost.com reports that a driving instructor on Long Island was driving dangerously with students in the vehicle before he rear-ended another car. The instructor was arrested for drunk driving following the crash.
Fortunately, the students who were in the vehicle just before the collision had exited the car out of concern for their own safety. The instructor from the Suffolk Auto Driving School, 58-year-old Russell Cohen had three students in the car with him on Saturday, October 6, 2018.
According to the students, Cohen said inappropriate things to the two female teenage driving students and drive the vehicle into a curb during the course of the lesson.
At about 11 in the morning, the students talked Cohen into entering a McDonald’s parking lot located on Middle Country Road where all four exited the vehicle and called 911. The students entered McDonald’s, and when they did not come back out, the instructor drove away.
About 45 minutes after the students left the vehicle, Cohen was driving in Ridge when he rear-ended a Honda on Montauk Trail. The 29-year-old driver of the Honda was injured in the crash.
The injuries sustained by the driver of the Honda are not believed to be life-threatening.
Cohen is facing charges for “aggravated DWI and endangering the welfare of a child.” Although the number of drunk driving accidents in the United States has declined over time, alcohol is still frequently a contributing factor in many car accidents and car accident related fatalities. About one-third of all car accident deaths that occur across America are caused by drivers who are under the influence of alcohol.
