HEMPSTEAD, NY- Longisland.com reports that a motorcyclist was killed in a collision with another vehicle in Hempstead on Saturday, October 6, 2018. The crash occurred at about 11:29 a.m. The victim was identified as 31-year-old Osrick Powell of Hollis. Powell was riding south on North Franklin Street on his 2016 Suzuki motorcycle when he struck another vehicle.
The other vehicle, a 2015 Dodge was driving northbound and was about to make a left turn onto Smith Street at the time of the crash.
Powell was crushed between the Dodge and the motorcycle. Powell sustained internal injuries in the collision and was taken to a nearby hospital. At 12:49 p.m. the hospital staff declared the motorcyclist dead.
The driver of the Dodge did not sustain any injuries in the crash. Police are still investigating the accident.
Motorcycles do not offer riders the protections that are presented by other vehicles, including, airbags, seatbelts, a roof or door beams. Cars are also larger and easier to see than motorcycles, therefore reducing the chances of a crash. Because of the lack of protections for motorcyclists, the risk of injuries or death in collisions is high. In fact, over 80 percent of all motorcycle crashes that are reported result in the motorcyclist sustaining injuries.
Most crashes involving motorcycles take place at intersections. One of the most dangerous events for a motorcyclist is a left-turning car. Out of all motorcycle crashes that involve other vehicles, around one-third are the result of a vehicle making a turn and entering the path of a motorcycle. It is important for motorcyclists to be proactive and anticipate that there are situations where they might not be seen by drivers.
