A man was struck and killed in the early morning hours of October 7 when he attempted to cross an intersection in Copiague, New York. The man was carrying a mini-refrigerator Suffolk County police said.
Juan Vinas-Marte, 45, of Copiague, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at Dixon Avenue and Great Neck Road, police said. The accident occurred about 3:40 a.m., Newsday reports. Vinas-Marte was struck by a Honda Accord driven by Jean Tatjana, 44, of Amityville, police said. Tatjana was not hurt. Newsday reports that no charges had been filed as of Friday afternoon.
The Honda was impounded for a safety check. First Squad detectives and crime scene detectives are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
Photos taken at the scene show the mini-refrigerator in the road not far from Vinas-Marte, near a crosswalk. The Honda stopped about 30 to 40 feet away, on the other side of the intersection. Suffolk police ask anyone with information about the accident to call detectives at 631-854-8152.
