LIE Were Closed Due To A Tractor Trailer Accident. All eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway were closed due to an overturned tractor trailer during the Monday, October 3, morning rush hour, Nassau County police reported. The accident occurred about 9:45 a.m. between Exit 33, Lakeville Road, and Exit 34, New Hyde Park Road, in Manhasset, according to Newsday.
According to initial indications, there were no major injuries according to a police spokeswoman, but she did not have details. “Minor injuries so far that we know of,” she said. The spokeswoman also said it seems the accident included a substance being spilled on the expressway, that could be fuel, reports Newsday.
Two other vehicles were involved. One was a Honda CRV that was also damaged from the crash. The eastbound LIE lanes were closed for several hours, reports WPIX Channel 11. Tractor trailer accidents have been a growing concern. They have been on the rise, perhaps due to various cutbacks such as truck “weight stations” mostly closed along the expressway which is an example of a decline in regulation and monitoring of these huge rigs.
In addition, drivers often feel pressured to get their products to their destination as quickly and efficiently as they can, often leading to drivers pressing on with insufficient rest periods. This can precipitate distracted driving or simply driving while not 100 percent alert. A recent special report on a national news program focused on the tractor trailer problems facing the tri-state area in particular.
The rise in recent big rig accidents has brought these problems to the attention of the Department of Transportation and the general public, which hopefully will bring about increased awareness and regulation in keeping our highways safe for everyone.
