BRENTWOOD, NY- Longislandnews12.com reports that a multi-vehicle crash occurred Sunday at 12:30 a.m. on the Long Island Expressway. The collision caused serious injuries to an off-duty NYPD officer. According to police, a 2012 BMW and a 2010 Honda had pulled over to the side of the expressway near exit 53. While the occupants of the vehicles were outside of their cars, a 2013 Ford sedan crashed into the Honda. The collision led to a chain reaction.
The Ford hit the Honda, causing it to smash into the BMW. Anthony Robitaille, 27, was then hit by the BMW. Robitaille is a police officer from the 75thPrecinct in Brooklyn, NY. Following the accident, Robitaille was sent to Stony Brook University Hospital by airlift.
The individual who had been driving the Ford was brought to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Robitaille is said to have only joined the police force recently. The officer’s neighbors say the 27-year-old’s life-long dream was to be a police officer.
Pulling off the highway is a risky endeavor. AAA says it is important to use a great deal of caution if you are in a situation where you have to pull onto a shoulder. Always pull over as far as you can and use emergency blinkers if possible or flares to alert other drivers to your presence. In many cases, you should avoid getting out of the vehicle, although if you are afraid the car will be hit, you may not want to remain in the car. If you exit you should go through the left side of the car or the side that is farthest away from traffic.
Always call for help from emergency responders who are equipped with safety gear to protect everyone until your car is fixed or towed.

How Do I Get My Police Report?
Within hours of an arrest or accident, a police report is generated by the investigating officer who inputs the case information. If the case is ongoing, it may be difficult to obtain the report or you may only be able to get the “public portion” until the case has wrapped up and any charges have been filed. After the police investigation has concluded, your attorney will have access to the full police report and you can ask them for a copy. The only other way to obtain a copy of a police report is to go to your local government website and request a report by filling out a form and either submitting it electronically, via mail, or in person depending on the instructions listed on your local government’s website.
