Brain injuries can be some of the most devastating of those involved in vehicle accidents. These types of injuries can completely change a person and can have lasting effects on family members. Numerous types of brain injuries can happen during a vehicle accident, but they generally fall into one of two categories: traumatic and acquired.
Types of Brain Injuries Seen from Car Accidents
Traumatic brain injuries occur due to a severe blow to the victim’s head. These are common in vehicle accidents because drivers’ and passengers’ heads can strike parts of the vehicle or hit the ground during a collision. Traumatic brain injuries can involve skull fractures or visible injuries to the head. Examples of traumatic brain injuries from car accidents include:
- Concussions – A concussion is a trauma to the head involving a shaking or moving of the brain. A concussion can often be accompanied by loss of consciousness but will also exhibit other symptoms that can be difficult to tie back to a head injury.
- Contusions – A contusion is bleeding on the brain. These are also caused by a blow to the head and will often require surgery to prevent life-threatening complications.
- Penetrative injuries – Penetrative injuries are caused by objects passing into the skull or brain. These are rarer in car accidents but can happen due to glass or debris flying at a victim during the collision. These injuries can be fatal or result in lifelong complications.
Acquired brain injuries can also occur from a force upon the head, but they usually involve another type of injury that affects the brain. These include anoxia and hypoxic brain injury in which the brain is receiving no oxygen or too little oxygen. These brain injuries can have some of the most profound effects on victims.
