A recent avoidable death at hospital shows that negligent medical mistakes can happen even where safeguards are in place.
Hospitals and other healthcare facilities around the country have – or should have – safeguards, protocols, and procedures in place that are designed to prevent a doctor’s, nurse’s, or other professional’s or employee’s careless acts from causing harm to the patient. However, these are not foolproof: negligent decisions can still result in a terrible outcome for the patient.
In Tennessee, a 75-year-old patient at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Tennessee was allegedly killed as a result of a nurse’s careless decision to override safety procedures resulted in the patient receiving a fatal dose of the drug Vercuronium, which is one of the drugs used for lethal injections in Tennessee and which induces paralysis. The woman, according to her attorneys, suffered excruciating pain before dying several days after the incident. Initial investigations suggest that the nurse was searching for another drug that began with V and ignored one or more safety protocols designed to prevent the wrong medication from being given to a patient.
