Morris County, New Jersey – Abc7nyy.com reports that an accident involving a school bus and a dump truck has resulted in two fatalities. The identity of those killed in the crash have not been released, but reportedly one adult and one child have died. Forty-five people were injured, and some victims were reportedly ejected. All of the injured individuals have been transported to local hospitals including Saint Clare’s Dover Hospital, Morristown Medical Center and Hackettstown Medical Center.
The crash happened in Morris County on I-80 on the morning of May 17, 2018. The collision caused the bus to turn over and the front of the vehicle was torn off. There were more than 40 people on the bus when the crash occurred, including fifth-grade students from East Brook Middle School, located in Paramus. The students were on a field trip to Waterloo Village along with two other buses full of students. The other two buses returned to the school following the accident.
One parent said that it took him hours to locate his injured daughter after the accident because she had suffered such a severe concussion that she provided medical workers with the wrong name. The student is expected to recover from her injuries but is still in the hospital where they will continue to observe her.
Governor Phil Murphy went to the school after the collision and posted on Facebook that “our hearts are broken by today’s tragedy.”
The truck involved in the collision was from Mendez Trucking. The company has 40 trucks and has been involved in seven crashes over the last two years. Mendez Trucking was fined $22,850 in 2016 for violations of regulations.
