According to an online news report by nbcnewyork.com, a man stole a box truck and then drove the truck into several vehicles throughout Brooklyn and Queens. The driver also struck one vehicle the resulted in the wrongful death of a woman, according to police.
The fatal accident occurred approximately at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. The man took a box truck that was parked in the Queens neighborhood of Richmond Hill, according to law enforcement statements in the news article. The man allegedly crashed into a motor vehicle at the intersection of Rentar Plaza and Metropolitan Avenue, police stated. The man was witnessed on surveillance video driving through a red light, and then he drove the truck into a black SUV which attempting to turn left. The box truck then T-boned the SUV. The man sped off, leaving the scene of the accident and drove into Brooklyn. Police stated that the man likely hit another vehicle near Williamsburg.
According to law enforcement, the 37-year-old man in the stolen box truck returned to Queens and struck more than ten other motor vehicles. Some of the vehicles hit were in Middle Village, where he was stopped and placed under arrest by police. The driver abandoned the box truck and ran into the M train subway station. An eyewitness whose automobile was damaged by the box truck driver saw the man leave the box truck wielding a wrench and screwdriver. Law enforcement officers had all electricity in the subway cut off, and the police ran after the man into the subway tunnel and arrested the man.
The victim in the first accident in Richmond Hill was transported to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was tragically passed away from his personal injuries. The victim was a 25-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York.
The suspect is charged with multiple crimes including, assault, manslaughter, fleeing the scene of an accident, grand larceny, and reckless endangerment. The man remained silent as he was led away in handcuffs.
