Heavy traffic is a frustrating and common inconvenience that is sometimes predictable, and other times seems to come out of nowhere with little explanation. Morning rush hour traffic is a form of recurring congestion, but it can be made worse by unexpected events like traffic accidents, bad weather, and construction.
While drivers often have no control over whether they get caught in a traffic jam, there are things drivers can do to prevent making the situation worse. By driving carefully, drivers can reduce their chances of being involved in a collision.
One major cause of car accidents is distracted driving, which is most commonly caused by people looking at their phones while driving. This dangerous behavior has been shown to increase a person’s likelihood of being involved in a crash by double. Of course, in heavy traffic, it can be tempting to look at a phone, but it is important to find other ways to remain awake and attentive while behind the wheel.
Drivers should also try to remain calm while driving. Traffic jams are frustrating, but road rage can be deadly. Aggressive driving is common and involves tailgating, speeding, and running through red lights. While feeling angry and getting mad at other drivers on the road is common and fairly normal, drivers should remember to take deep breaths and try to stay calm. Aggressive driving behaviors never improve traffic conditions.
