NYC speeding ticket
NYC- Gothamist.com writes that with very little traffic on New York City’s streets, some motorists are recklessly speeding and putting others at risk.
In one incident, a driver took to the road in a Porsche only to crash the vehicle into another car whilst attempting risky maneuvers. The driver is caught on video trying to flee the crash scene, but then crashing into multiple parked cars. Police later stated that they arrested the man who was driving the Porsche. The 33-year-old was apparently under the influence of drugs at the time. Officers stated that the man is facing charges for driving while impaired and reckless driving.
The incident is one of several involving drivers racing at high speeds through the city. School zone speed cameras issued more than twice as many speeding tickets in March as they did in January. Some reports indicate that drivers are being ticketed for traveling at speeds of 90 miles an hour or more.
While speed cameras are identifying more of these incidents, police are issuing fewer citations. Officers are required to provide security at certain places and are therefore less available to enforce traffic laws. The number of tickets issued by officers has therefore dropped significantly both in the city and on Long Island.
People in the city are concerned that this reckless driving will get someone killed. Anecdotally, New Yorkers report seeing many apparent drag races and other dangerous behaviors.
Some locals lament that drivers are failing to slow down, saying that they are creating problems in the city during an already difficult time.
Even prior to the cars racing through the city, pedestrians and cyclists were dying in higher numbers, and reports indicate that drivers are to blame for the majority of these tragic deaths.
