Fatal pedestrian crashes have been dropping in New York City in recent years. The city has made great efforts through the Vision Zero initiative to cut down on all types of motor vehicle-related fatalities. The concept behind Vision Zero is that no number of fatal vehicle accidents are inevitable and that it is possible to eliminate all of these deaths through careful planning, laws, and law enforcement efforts.
One of the best ways to make pedestrians safer is to lower speed limits in places where there are often pedestrians. Pedestrians have a much greater chance of living through a crash when a vehicle is traveling slower. There has been a recent push to lower the speed limit to 20 miles per hour in places with a lot of foot traffic. At this speed, accidents are rarely fatal.
When it comes to pedestrian crashes with larger vehicles, such as buses or trucks, there are greater risks. These vehicles often have large blind spots which means that drivers may not be able to see pedestrians in their vicinity. People near these vehicles should be extra cautious, especially when the vehicle is turning as drivers often fail to notice pedestrians and cyclists when they are making a turn.
