WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY- Nbcnewyork.com reports that 79-year-old Yonkers resident Roseanne Cassano drove her vehicle into Enzo’s Ristorante at about 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2018. Nine individuals were injured in the crash, four of them were seriously hurt, although the details regarding their injuries have not been reported.
The incident was caught on a surveillance camera, which shows Cassano’s vehicle back into a white car that was stopped at a traffic light, before running into reverse, doing a full 360, and ending up inside the restaurant.
Cassano stayed at the site of the accident and has now been charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI).
Across the United States, vehicles crash into commercial buildings, including restaurants and storefronts, about 60 times every day. The drivers most likely to be involved in storefront crashes are those that have under five years of experience behind the wheel, and drivers who are over the age of 70. Thanks to the aging population in America, and the increasing use of mobile technology, these types of accidents are projected to increase in coming years.
Much as 30% of accidents involving cars striking buildings are the result of operator errors. This means that the driver was speeding, or in the wrong gear when they hit the building. Another 26% of this type of accident are caused by pedal errors, where the driver hit the gas pedal when they meant to hit the brake. Drunk driving accounts for about 17% of crashes into buildings. Traffic accidents, where a collision causes a car to then hit a building, cause 11%, 8% are attributed to medical emergencies, and finally, about 7% are intentional actions taken by people who use a car to break into a building and commit a robbery.
One possible way to reduce these types of accidents is to reconfigure parking lots. Spaces that face directly at buildings create a risk of this type of collision occurring.
