NEW YORK, NY- Newyork.cbslocal.com reports that 32 people traveling on two NJ Transit buses were injured in a collision that occurred in the Lincoln Tunnel on the morning of Friday, May 18, 2018. The buses were close to the Manhattan end of the tunnel when on bus rear-ended another at about 10 a.m.
The front bus was carrying 25 people, and the bus that rear-ended it was carrying 37 individuals. Twenty-three of those injured only suffered minor harm and were transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Eight individuals were reportedly seriously injured, but none of the injuries were considered life-threatening. One injured person refused treatment at the scene of the accident.
The deputy chief of the Port Authority police, Raymond Bryant, stated that the investigation was in its preliminary stages and that after looking into the accident and video recordings they would be able to piece together what had gone wrong.
The buses managed to get out of the tunnel before the arrival of first responders. Both buses involved were from New Jersey. Each vehicle suffered minor damage, but the speed at which they were traveling is not yet known. The drivers of the buses were among those injured and were both taken to the hospital.
Mayor Bill de Blasio commented on the accident and expressed his relief that the injuries to all involved were not life-threatening. Mayor de Blasio has made road safety a major part of his platform. When he campaigned for Mayor, he proposed bringing Vision Zero to New York City. The initiative has shown progress in reducing pedestrian fatalities but has done little to curb the number of deaths of motorists within the city.
