QUEENS, New York — Three people are dead after a horrific head-on crash in Queens. The initial reports indicate that one of the vehicles involved was driving in the wrong direction and caused the accident. The terrible head‑on collision occurred on Grand Central Parkway exit near the intersection with Cross Island Parkway, according to the New York Post. One person survived the crash but sustained critical injuries. The person who suffered the critical injuries was a 30‑year older person identified as the driver of a Hyundai sedan. The two occupants of the car allegedly traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes were killed in the crash, according to the New York Daily News.
Police say that a Honda Accord was going in the wrong direction in the left lane around 5:40 a.m. in the Little Neck section of Queens. An off‑duty New York Fire Fighter driving on the east side of the road saw the Honda going in the same direction that he was on, which was on the opposite side of the road. He was traveling at a very high rate of speed. The firefighter estimated that the car going the wrong way was faster than the 55 miles per hour he was driving. The firefighter said he next saw smoke ahead of him.
The firefighter said that both cars crashed in the left lane and burst into flames. He also said that the front end of each vehicle was crushed to its windshield. All of the windows blew out of each car.
The fireman and two Emergency Management workers tried to pull open doors to save trapped victims. At least one of the victims displayed a pulse, according to the fireman. The fireman said that the wreckage appeared as though each driver pulled onto the shoulder to avoid the other.
Both of the occupants in the Honda were thrown onto the road by the collision. Police identified one of the men as a man in his thirties from Schenectady. Doctors at North Shore University Hospital pronounced both of the men deceased. A 26‐year older woman riding in the Honda did not survive the crash.
