NASSAU COUNTY, NY- Newsday.com writes that a woman sustained severe injuries in a hit-and-run accident earlier this week. The victim was identified as a 39-year-old woman. Reports indicate that the woman was taken to a local hospital in serious condition from “multiple trauma injuries.”
The incident occurred during the evening on Milburn Avenue near Merrick Road. The driver of the dark-colored sedan that struck the pedestrian fled the scene. The police are still searching for information about the driver and the vehicle involved.
The car is suspected of having damage on its hood on the front passenger side.
Pedestrian accidents are taking place more often across the country. Many of these accidents happen at night and outside of intersections or crosswalks. Distractions, such as cell phones, are considered to be a big part of the problem because both people on foot and drivers are often looking at their screens instead of the road and their surroundings. Poor lighting also contributes because drivers often fail to see people walking near or on the road.
Hit-and-run drivers are those that leave the scene of any vehicle accident. These drivers face harsh penalties, including jail time, for leaving before the accident is reported and investigated. Police who work on hit-and-run cases say that these drivers are often drunk, have no valid license, or have a warrant out for their arrest. Drivers who fear repercussions for driving under the influence or breaking another law tend to be more prone to leaving the scene. Police often must rely on witnesses to track down these suspects. Unfortunately, many of them are never caught or charged for their crimes.
