Juul Labs has conceded to public pressure and temporarily suspended their mint Juul pods from sale. The mint Juul suspension has been hailed as a victory for public health, while some raise questions about why the action was not taken sooner.
According to CNBC and other sources, the mint Juul suspension is the result of the publication of a study that showed mint to be a favored flavor among teens. In the study published on Nov. 5, 2019, in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 42,531 respondents in 8th, 10th, and 12th grades were polled about their e-cigarette usage. 12% of the respondents were users of Juul products in the last 30 days, and of those 5,359 users, a random sample of 1,800 users was used for data collection. According to the study, mint Juul pods were the most popular flavor among 10th and 12th graders and the second most popular flavor for 8th graders narrowly beaten out by mango.
The mint Juul suspension has been presented as a major sacrifice for Juul Labs in the name of public health. Since ending the online sales of their mango, fruit, and other sweet flavors in October 2019, mint Juul pods have comprised 70% of Juul’s U.S. revenues according to an anonymous source familiar with the company’s finances.
This decision to delay the removal of mint, however, has been alleged to be an intentional act by former senior vice president of finance Siddharth Breja in a lawsuit last month. According to Breja, then CEO Kevin Burns told staff members that by removing fruity flavors but leaving mint, there would still be an appealing flavor for consumers who were drawn to the pleasant flavors of sweetened Juuls. Regardless of its intent in leaving the flavor on the market, the mint Juul suspension has now left only three flavors available for U.S. Juul users: menthol, Virginia tobacco, and classic tobacco.

The mint Juul suspension has been heralded as a win on both sides of the e-cigarette debate. For proponents of regulating or banning Juul and similar e-cigarettes, the mint Juul suspension means that the only flavors available for purchase by minors will be tobacco flavors, and for proponents of Juul and other e-cigarette companies, the mint Juul suspension can be counted as a credit to the corporation’s flagging reputation. There is, however, a caveat to these victories, as sweetly flavored Juul products are still in circulation across the nation and tens of thousands of minors are still becoming addicted to this risky product and suffering the hidden consequences as a result.
