The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just announced a recall issued by Avon for microwave popcorn makers.
Some 55,000 Avon Microware Popcorn Makers that were sold in the United States are being recalled over the potential for fire and burns, according to the Associated Press (AP).
The recalled Avon popcorn makers retailed for about $13 and were sold in the United States through Avon’s website and Avon sales representatives from October through February, the AP said.
When cooked too long, the popcorn can overheat in the Avon popcorn maker and ignite, posing a fire or burn hazard to consumers. To date, Avon has received 20 reports of the popcorn makers overheating, including two incidents involving fires that resulted in damage to microwave ovens. No injuries have been reported.
The recalled Avon Microware Popcorn Maker involved is item number 474-105 and can be found in Avon’s brochures and website. The recalled plastic popcorn maker consists of a clear tub and a yellow, vented lid.
The tub is six inches tall and measures 7.5 inches in diameter and is constructed with three feet at the base. The words “DO NOT REMOVE WITH BARE HANDS. HOLD UNIT WITH GLOVES” is molded into the plastic of the lid and the words “USE IN MICROWAVE OVEN ONLY” is molded into the underside of the bowl. The words “Made in Taiwan” are printed on an adhesive label located on the underside of the bowl.
The CPSC warns that consumers should stop using the Avon popcorn makers and notes that it is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
Consumers should also contact Avon to receive a copy of the updated instructions on how to safely use the microwave popcorn maker. The new instructions can also be obtained from independent Avon representatives and on Avon’s website at www.avon.com under the “Product Recall section.”
The recalled Avon Microware Popcorn Makers were imported through Avon Products, Inc., of New York, New York and manufactured by Okay Enterprise Co., Ltd., of Kunshan City, Taiwan.
