The recalled coffee product may contain undeclared desmethyl carbodenafil. This ingredient is similar sildenafil citrate, which is the active ingredient in Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs, noted The Daily Hornet. The presence of this drug might be deadly when combined with nitrates found in heart and blood pressure medications, according to an FDA recall notice issued Thursday.
The generic version of the drug, Viagra, is known as sildenafil. Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra, which is the brand name for the drug manufactured by drug maker, Pfizer. The drug is on the market as Viagra and the generic drug, sildenafil, according to MedXpress. Sildenafil is one drug in a family of medications called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors. Also, according to the media outlet, Bestherbs Coffee LLC indicated that it is notifying its customers of the natural herbs coffee recall by telephone.
The recall comes nearly a year after the FDA issued a public notice warning against use of the same brand of coffee, also after desmethyl carbodenafil was found in the product, according to The Daily Hornet. In that warning, the FDA noted a trend of dietary supplements or conventional foods containing undeclared medications and/or chemicals. “These products are typically promoted for sexual enhancement, weight loss, and body building and are often represented as being ‘all natural,’” the agency indicated. “FDA is unable to test and identify all products marketed as dietary supplements that have potentially harmful hidden ingredients.” To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the most recent Bestherbs Coffee recall.
