More than 2000 plaintiffs have joined a massive Chinese drywall class action lawsuit that was filed yesterday in Louisiana federal court.
The lawsuit names names Knauf Plasterboard (Tianjin) Co., Ltd., along with 600 others, as defendants. The Chinese drywall complaint was filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, where all pending federal cases have been consolidated in a multidistrict litigation. The first bellwether trial in that litigation are expected to begin in January, and is expected to involve a case out of Virginia.
One interesting note, foxlive8.com is reporting that New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton was named a lead plaintiff in the massive Chinese drywall lawsuit that was filed yesterday. We reported over the summer that Payton had been forced from his Mandeville, Louisiana home because of problems attributed to Chinese drywall.
So far, the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has received 2,276 reports from residents in 32 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico concerning Chinese drywall. Tests recently released by the agency of 51 homes confirmed that the presence of hydrogen sulfide is the essential component that causes copper and silver sulfide corrosion found in Chinese drywall homes.
The CPSC is still trying to determine the long-term hazards posed by the contaminated drywall.
