Woodstock film The April recall, which involved 162,000 robes, was issued because some robes failed to meet federal flammability requirements and present a risk of serious burns to consumers if they are exposed to an open flame. At that time, Blair said that it had received three reports of the robes catching on fire, including one report of second-degree burns.
According to the Consumer Reports Web site, Blair said it took a number of steps to alert its customers of the recall in April, including send a letter that month to the address of every catalog and internet customer who purchased one of the robes, as well as a follow up letter earlier this week to all customers who did not respond to the first mailing. Blair also e-mailed customers who purchased a robe either online or through one of its catalogs and did not respond to the mailings, Consumer Reports said. Finally, the company began calling approximately 63,000 customers with robes still in their possession, placed advertisements in local papers to alert consumers to return the robes, and posted information about the recall on its Web site. It was through this outreach that the company learned of the six fatalities.
