To date, no incidents or injuries have been reported; however, this is just one in a series of Roman Shade recalls on which we have written. In recent months, a variety of firms have been recalling Roman shades and roll-up blinds over the risk of strangulation risks to children. As we have previously written, according to the CPSC, Roman shades have been implicated in the deaths of five children and 16 near strangulations since 2006. Roll-up blinds have been cited in three strangulation deaths since 2001.

Strangulations in Roman shades can occur when a child places his/her neck between the exposed inner cord and the fabric on the backside of the blind or when a child pulls the cord out and wraps it around his/her neck, the agency said. Strangulations in roll-up blinds can occur if the lifting loop slides off the side of the blind and a child’s neck becomes entangled on the free-standing loop or if a child places his/her neck between the lifting loop and the roll-up blind material.

This particular recall involves three styles of Roman shades: Standard, tasseled, and Duppioni, which were sold at Blair and other retail stores in Warren and Grove City, Pennsylvania; Blair catalogs; and www.blair.com between April 2007 and January 2010 for between $15 and $65. A complete listing of the Roman Shades involved in this recall can be accessed at the CPSC’s Web site at: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml10/10217.html

The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled Roman shades and contact the Window Covering Safety Council for a free repair kit. Consumers can call (800) 506-4636 anytime or visit the Council’s Web site at www.windowcovering.org. Blair can be reached toll-free at (877) 392-7095 between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., Eastern Time, Monday through Saturday; at the firm’s website at www.blair.com; or by email at blairproductrecall@blair.com.
