JFC International Inc., located at 40 Varick Ave, Brooklyn, New York, 11237 is recalling frozen Capelin discovered by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors during a routine inspection and subsequent analysis of the product by food laboratory personnel confirming that the fish was not properly eviscerated prior to processing.
This product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum spores, which can cause <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/food_poisoning">Botulism.
Botulism is a serious and potentially fatal form of food poisoning that can cause life-threatening illness or death. Symptoms can include: General weakness, dizziness, double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech and trouble with speaking or swallowing, and dry mouth. Difficulty in breathing; weakness of other muscles—for instance, muscle weakness that starts at the shoulders and moves progressively down the body—abdominal distension, and constipation may also be common symptoms. Botulism poisoning can cause paralysis of breathing muscles, which can lead to death without treatment and respiratory ventilation in about eight percent of cases.
The sale of un-eviscerated fish is prohibited under New York State Agriculture and Markets regulations because Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated fish has been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning.
The recalled frozen capelin comes in a plastic wrapped styrofoam tray with the following codes: Frozen capelin 7l8p, frozen capelin 7l5p, frozen capelin 6l10p, frozen capelin 6l8p, frozen capelin 6l5p, frozen capelin 5l10p, frozen capelin 5l8p. the recalled fish is a product of Vietnam and was sold nationwide.
No illnesses have been reported, to date, in connection with this recall; however, foodborne illnesses do take time to manifest and many are never reported.
